WOOSTER, Ohio -- Cattle producers and others in the industry seeking to increase their knowledge and skills of rearing dairy heifers are invited to attend an Ohio State University Dairy Heifer Care and Management Workshop.
The two-day event will be held Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC). It is sponsored by sponsored by the Ohio State University Extension Center at Wooster, Veterinary Preventive Medicine, Department of Animal Sciences, and Select Sires, Inc.
Registration is $195 per person, which includes all reference materials, weigh tapes, growth charts, two sets of disposable coveralls, boots, gloves, lab supplies, lunch and refreshments. Registration for additional attendees is $155 per person. The fee is $155 for individuals who participated in the Neonatal Calf Care and Management Workshop in March. Ohio Dairy Producers members receive a $10 discount per member farm.
The Dairy Heifer Care and Management Workshop will explore all aspects of heifer care from weaning to freshening. Topics of discussion include growth and nutrition, disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention, managing the heifer enterprise, housing heifers, designing safe and efficient handling systems, successful reproduction and communications.
The event will also include intensive hands-on lab workshops on the anatomy of the reproductive tract, correct heat detection and measuring growth.
