Training Workshop Offers Certification in Manure Handling

January 9, 2006

MARYSVILLE, Ohio -- Manure application can be an asset for livestock producers, or a liability depending on how properly it is handled. A training workshop will be held in February for custom manure applicators interested in becoming certified or who want to learn more about manure management practices.

The Certified Livestock Manager Training session will be held Feb. 1-2, at the Agricultural Center of Union County in Marysville, Ohio. The event is being sponsored by Ohio State University Extension, Ohio Department of Agriculture, Ohio Livestock Coalition, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the Great Lakes Regional Water Quality Program.

Those who manage or handle manure at animal feeding facilities, or buy, sell or apply manure are invited to attend the training. To receive licensing through ODA, a producer or custom applicator must attend three "core" training sessions and three "elective" sessions. The Certified Livestock Managers Training session enables participants to complete all the training needed for initial certification. Managers need 10 hours of continuing education every three years to maintain certification.

Topics to be covered during the training session include: nutrient management training, manure storage and handling training, emergency management planning, and a review of the rules and regulations concerning manure handling.

Cost of the Certified Livestock Manager Training is $10 each day for Midwest Professional Nutrient Applicator Association (MPNAA) members, and $20 each day for non-members.

For more information, or to register, contact Kelly Harvey at ODA at (614) 387-0908,or e-mail harvey@mail.agri.state.oh.us. Registration deadline is Jan. 23.
