From Sports to the Workplace, Leadership Can Propel Success

December 20, 2007

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- When the Ohio State University Buckeyes take to the field for the BCS National Championship on January 7, fans will be entertained to more than just a football game. They'll see teamwork, integrity, community and respect -- aspects of leadership skills that have led to success. And it's a model that anybody can follow.

"If you look below the surface, football is more than just a Saturday afternoon sport. It's a framework of leadership principles that builds a sense of teamwork," said Jeff King, director of the Ohio State University Leadership Center. "Furthermore, that sense of teamwork results in national championships for the Buckeye football team and, for others, more successful companies and organizations."

Tressel demonstrates that model of positive leadership in a video, "Beyond the Sidelines: Lessons in Leadership with Jim Tressel," that was developed by the OSU Leadership Center in partnership with Tressel. The purpose of the center is to build leadership qualities in all facets of human interaction, whether it's in an office or on a football field. The OSU Leadership Center offers research-based programs and workshops, provides cutting-edge leadership resources, and helps build leadership qualities, from honesty and accountability to focusing on team goals.

"The video is just one example of what we offer. It's a product of self-contained leadership that people can apply to their own situations," said King. "Additionally, the leadership center builds and assesses educational programs, as well as offers direct teaching. Our focus extends beyond campus and into communities across Ohio."

The OSU Leadership Center has worked with over 100 businesses and organizations across the state.

The OSU Leadership Center, an outreach component of Ohio State University Extension, was created in 1990 and is located on the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences campus in Columbus, Ohio. It's recognized as the foremost center for making a positive difference in the lives of individuals, families, organizations, and communities through leadership education and research.
