OSU Nursery Short Course/CENTS Set for Jan. 23-26

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State University Extension educators and horticulture industry organizers are gearing up for the 2011 OSU Nursery Short Course and the Ohio Nursery & Landscape Association Central Environmental Nursery Trade Show (CENTS).

The event will be held January 23-26 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio. Trade show hours run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 24-25 and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Jan. 26. OSU Nursery Short Course hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 23, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 24-26. There will also be pre-show events and activities on Jan. 23.

CENTS is one of the nation's most comprehensive green industry trade shows. The Ohio State Nursery Short Course enhances CENTS with workshops, educational sessions, and presentations on green industry topics including rain gardens, landscape design, perennials, invasive plants, landscape architecture, pruning trees, tree root development, garden center marketing and merchandising, green roofs, pesticide issues, spray technologies, insects and diseases, and native plants.

The events are sponsored by Ohio State University's Department of Horticulture and Crop Science, the Ohio Nursery and Landscape Association, and Ohio State University Extension's Nursery, Landscape and Turf Team.

The Nursery Short Course program kicks off on Jan. 23 with pre-show sessions and presentations, including workshops on becoming a certified irrigation auditor, working with stone, controlling pests and hands-on digital photography. The pre-show workshops will take place on Ohio State University's College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences campus in Columbus.

The session format for the OSU Nursery Short Course is organized into tracks that contain 60-minute presentations, focusing on and developing subjects from introductory level to more-in depth presentations. In addition to the OSU Nursery Short Course, the 15th annual P.L.A.N.T. Seminar will be held on Jan. 23 beginning at 8:15 a.m. This year's theme is "Plants and Design for the Suburban Landscape." Presentations include sustainability in the garden, four-star perennials, garden design tips, arts and crafts, and shrubs. Other events taking place during CENTS include: the ONLA awards night; Better Than a Box Lunch networking event; ONLA career marketplace; Ohio Certified Nursery Technician exams; PLANET’s landscape industry certified exams; the ONLA annual business meeting/luncheon; the American Nursery and Landscape Association's Town Hall Meeting and Ohio Chapter Annual Meeting; the ANLA Wholesale Plant Sales Professional meeting; and the PLANET Town Hall meeting.
