Kids' Show in Secrest Arboretum: It's Not Rocket Science -- Wait, It Is

July 6, 2011

WOOSTER, Ohio -- Secrest Arboretum’s next Whiz Bang! Science Show “will be a blast,” says presenter Dave Lohnes, better known as “Dr. Dave.”

The program will focus on rocket science, including Newton’s laws of motion, aerodynamics, stability and remote exploration -- the remote control of robots across a great distance.

“And we’ll blast off lots of rockets,” said Lohnes, who’s normally a web developer at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) in Wooster, the arboretum’s home. “I’m building a platform so we can have, like, four rockets set up to launch” in a row.

The show takes place in the arboretum’s John Streeter Garden Amphitheater on July 14 at 7 p.m. It’s free for kids of all ages and their families.

OARDC is at 1680 Madison Ave. in Wooster. Signs on the campus will direct you to the arboretum.

Call 330-464-2148 to learn more or if the weather looks iffy. If the weather is bad, the show will be cancelled.

Lohnes’s shows, according to his website, aim to “excite kids and spark their interest in science.” The next one in the arboretum is set for Aug. 11.

OARDC is the research arm of Ohio State University's College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.
