June 24 Workshop: Get to Know Your Backyard Woods

July 9, 2011

KIRTLAND, Ohio – The Ohio Woodland Stewards Program, part of Ohio State University Extension, will present “The Woods in Your Backyard,” a workshop for landowners, on June 24 in Holden Arboretum.

Organizers say the program “is for landowners who have a small section of woods out back that they want to learn more about.”

Among the topics: “Good” and “bad” trees, attracting wildlife, identifying trees, and controlling invasive species.

Forestry experts with OSU Extension, the outreach arm of Ohio State’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, will be the instructors.

“We’ll spend part of the day inside learning the basics,” said Kathy Smith, coordinator of the Stewards Program and one of the workshop’s instructors. “Then we’ll take that knowledge outside to put it to good use.”

Holden Arboretum is at 9500 Sperry Rd. in Kirtland in northeast Ohio.

The $35 registration fee includes lunch and materials. Register and pay online by June 17 at http://go.osu.edu/DaR.
