Insects, Weeds and More: Register Now for July 20 Agronomy Field Day in South Charleston

July 13, 2011

SOUTH CHARLESTON, Ohio -- Grain farmers will learn everything they need to know to navigate this quirky growing season at the 2011 Western Agronomy Field Day, to be held Wednesday, July 20, at the Western Agricultural Research Station in South Charleston, Clark County.

Sponsored by Ohio State University Extension and the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC), the event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Registration is required and costs $20 per person, which includes lunch. To register, send your name, address, phone number and a check (payable to OSU Extension Champaign County) to Harold Watters, OSU Extension, 1512 South U.S. Highway 68, Suite B100, Urbana, OH 43078.

"This will be the place to learn what yield we can expect from our crops this year," said Watters, an agriculture and natural resources educator with OSU Extension. "With the late planting for the majority of Ohio crops, we will need to plan ahead for potential pests (weeds, insects or diseases), to get the most we can from this shortened crop season."

Attendees can expect an information-filled day beginning with check-in from 8:30-9:00 a.m. Wagon tours of field crop trials will follow from 9 a.m. to noon. The tours include presentations by several Ohio State experts, including:

  • Peter Thomison, Department of Horticulture and Crop Science, OSU Extension and OARDC, on late-planted corn.
  • Pierce Paul, Department of Plant Pathology, OSU Extension and OARDC, on whether there is a need for corn fungicides in 2011).
  • Mark Loux, Department of Horticulture and Crop Science, OSU Extension and OARDC, on weed management issues for 2011.
  • Mark Sulc, Department of Horticulture and Crop Science, OSU Extension and OARDC, on fall forage seeding and news regarding Roundup-Ready alfalfa.
  • Amanda Meddles, Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, OSU Extension, on how to sidedress manure to make better use of available resources.

After lunch, the second half of the field day will proceed with in-depth discussions with Ohio State specialists. Each participant will be able to attend two 45-minute sessions with any of the following:

  • Paul (corn disease management in a wet year).
  • Loux (weed management issues for 2011).
  • Sulc (forage management and fertility management).
  • Ron Hammond and Andy Michel, Department of Entomology, OARDC and OSU Extension (Western bean cutworm, soybean aphid and seed treatments).
  • Thomison (corn management issues in late plantings).
  • Watters (cover crops and Nitrogen management).

Part of OARDC, the Western Agricultural Research Station is located at 7721 South Charleston Pike, South Charleston, southeast of Springfield.
