Black River Team Wins OSU Green Fair Solar Boat Contest

 WOOSTER, Ohio -- The Wooster Campus Scarlet, Gray and Green Fair has announced the winners of its solar-powered boat races. Teams came from area high schools and were rated based on a prepared portfolio and the speed of their craft.

The fair took place April 19 at Ohio State University’s Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) in Wooster.

  • First place: Black River High School, Robby Thoerner, Aaron Volcansek, Sebastian Vidika, Chris Rolfe, Alex Dimond, Clayton Van Doren (advisor).
  • Second place: West Holmes High School, Kyle Brannon, Jordan Brown, Kenny Miller, Tyler Gray, Phil Duerksen (advisor).
  • Third place: Waynedale High School, Carthy Williams, Payton Gessel, Jill Crone, Naomi Fetzer, Emelie Hochstetler, Jennifer George (advisor).

Also competing were teams from Orrville, Rittman, Triway, Wooster, Loudonville and Northwestern high schools and the Wayne County Schools Career Center.

The annual Wooster Campus Scarlet, Gray and Green Fair is a community/university effort to teach about sustainability.

Ohio State’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences and three of its programs -- OARDC, Ohio State University Extension and the Agricultural Technical Institute -- together with the Wayne County Sustainable Energy Network are the fair’s coordinating sponsors.
